The Salento International Film Festival (SIFF) is a celebration of films and filmmakers from around the World. Promotes international independent film in recognition of the fact that movies are the most powerful form of cultural communication and link between cultures and peoples.

Founded in 2004, by Luigi Campanile, the Salento International Film Festival emerged as a major cultural event and one of the top film festival in Southern Italy. Each year it introduce filmmakers worldwide to the Salento area. 7 days of world premiere, special events, seminars, feature films, short-films and documentaries.

The Italian Cultural Institute is a partner in this year event, and our special thanks go to the Director CARLO PRESENTI and his staff for their continous cooperation and support to SIFF events through the past year.

Puglia contains the provinces of Bari (also the name of the regional capital city and now a chic resort), Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, Taranto and the new-born BAT (including the territories and the towns of Barletta, Andria and Trani). It covers an area of 19,356 sq km (7,474 sq mi) with a population of some 4 million. Puglia forms the heel of the Italian boot, jutting into the Ionian and Adriatic Seas towards Albania and forming the Gulf of Taranto to the west. The original inhabitants were probably from Illyria and Greece, and Hannibal and Frederick II were just two of the many invaders who passed through and left their mark (Puglia’s ports were also stopping points for the Crusaders in the Middle Ages). More recent ‘invaders’, who are claimed to have caused an increase in crime in the region, include Albanian and Kurdistan refugees, who frequently wash up on the shores of Puglia.The region has low rainfall and chronic water shortages and therefore only crops resistant to drought are successful. [...] The huge Tavoliere plateau near Foggia is a rich grain-growing plain producing around half of Italy’s durum wheat (for pasta); other important crops include olives, of which Puglia supplies around half the country’s needs, almonds and grapes (for wine). There’s some heavy industry at Bari, Barletta, Brindisi and Taranto, but the region has a high unemployment rate. The Gargano peninsula in the north-east has a steep, rocky coastline and peaks rising to around 1,000m (over 3,000ft); it encompasses a national park, where wooded crags thrust into the sea towards the tiny Tremiti Islands. Here lie the historic sanctuary of Monte San Angelo, attractive towns such as Peschici and Vieste, and tourist amenities such as the holiday villages at Pugnochiuso. The impressive grottos or Caves at Castellana are a major tourist attraction, as are the 13th century fortress of Castel del Monte in Andria and the marine grotto of Polignano. Property: The cities of Bari, Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce and Taranto contain superb examples of Baroque and Romanesque architecture. Unique local forms of architecture include white-washed houses with dark conical roofs known as trulli, which are found only in Alberobello, and isolated, walled country farmsteads (masserie). Traditional country and coastal properties include attractive, whitewashed cube-shaped houses. In general, property is reasonably priced except in the centre of cities; centrally-located property in Ostuni or Vieste costs from €1,000 to €1,800 per sq m, although prices in Barletta rise to €2,100 per m2. The property market is currently buoyant, although Italian buyers far outnumber foreigners; the few foreign buyers favour Brindisi, Gargano and Lecce area. Communications: A motorway and railway line run along the Adriatic coast, but connections to the west are difficult due to the Apennine mountains. The region’s main domestic airports are Bari and Brindisi. Regular ferries to Greece and the former Yugoslavia operate from Brindisi and Otranto.

The number of Swedish buyers come after the British ones. They haven’t been effected by the global crisis and their exchange rate is still good against the strongness of the Euro. Swedish people prefere brand-new property or taking a better advantage and choosing off-plan solutions which give them the opportunity to buy with a 20% discount of the final price. 

As for the rest of Europe, last winter we had a good new! Ryanair and other low cost airlines, start new direct flights from most of the Europe’s airports to Puglia and opened new markets for us, especially to Brindisi the nearest international airport to the south-western part of Puglia. Those new flights brought to us a good number of clients from Belgium first, followed by Norway, Netherlands and Denmark.

We are proud to offer character properties in a nice area, where buyers can enjoy history, food and beaches. There are also undiscovered Baroque towns down here, in the countryside or by the sea, with low-priced properties. I think that the South-Italy is a safe bet and the property market in Salento area continues its slow upward trend for a simple reason: the area is desirable to locals and non-residents, who both want a holiday home in a place unaffected by mass tourism and where there’s a safe and healthy property market. The hot spot for our clients is Puglia’s south-western coast and particularly the coastline between Gallipoli, Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina di Nardò passing by the next-door towns Galatone, Nardò, Maglie and Galatina.

WHAT TO CHOOSE?
Many agents highlight Puglia’s coast as the best place in the region to buy property right now. Seaside homes have held their value best since the onset of the recession, and as you can readily imagine, they offer the strongest holiday rental prospects if you plan on letting out your home when you’re not there. Luigi Spano of the Puglia specialist agency SIS Property and Tourism says “If I were to buy a home in Puglia today, I would choose a coastal property. It will keep its value in the worst times, will increase in value by 8-13 per cent each year in normal times, and will give me a rental income of 3-5 per cent.” Luigi particularly recommends buying off-plan as a route to big savings, saying that you are likely to pay 20-25 per cent less than the final price of a property if you buy before building is complete. THE BUYING GAME
Puglia was little heard of in Britain until 2004, when budget airlines first began serving the region. A flurry of interest followed immediately, and since then Puglia’s reputation has grown steadily – both in the UK and in other European countries. The recent recession hasn’t affected Puglia’s property market too badly. Today, foreign buyers are still interested in the region, and it’s expected that the recent introduction of two new Ryanair routes into Puglia (from Paris and Stockholm) will bring yet more interest over the coming months and years. Some agents report that property prices in Puglia are down by as much as 15 per cent compared to what they were three years ago. But this decrease isn’t consistent across the region. In particular, property on the coast seems to have held its value particularly well. Prices of seaside homes are very little changed, and the Puglian coast is still tipped as a very good place to put your money.
SUMMER’S LEASE
Finally, a word on holiday rentals in Puglia. As you might imagine, this sun-drenched and sea-girt region is much loved by holidaymakers, yet it manages to remain unspoilt and uncrowded. It’s a discerning crowd who come here – Italians from other regions as well as northern Europeans. You’re likely to get a good amount of client interest on a home in Puglia, especially if it’s on the coast. Visitor numbers to southern Puglia were up by 20 per cent last year. New flight routes, more visitors and continuing buyer interest… it seems like Puglia’s bright star is still ascending.
